I have a HD going out on my windows machine. I can't run scandisk using windows XP and want to use a linux equivelent. I want to check the drive, not just the filesystem. I've looked at fsck but I can't find a thorough option, or something of that nature.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

MadMasta,

badblocks. It makes no attempt to use the filesystem, just tests each block.
Read
Code:
man badblocks
since tests vary from readonly, non destrutive read/write testing to very thorough pattern tests, which are data destructive.

I've been looking into badblocks. All the examples I've found on the net and info in the man pages points to using it on partitions (e.g. /dev/hda1).

Is it possible to use the destructive read/write test on a whole disk (e.g. /dev/hda)? Is this even a sensible idea? As I see it badblocks writes a load of hex to the disk and then reads it back and checks for consistency. Is there a reason to create a partition first? I don't care about whatever's on the disk. I'm just looking for a way to check old second hand disks for problems.

Any help, info or ideas would be appreciated.
