you should checkout glest as well, I played it for a bit and it seems like a cool game, here's a link:
http://www.glest.org/
Last time I tried it there was no "save" option, which was kind of annoying since you go on and play for hours and can't save...
but its surely worth checking out and its in portage as well. |

If you're willing to pay, I'd go with Starcraft even though it's fairly old.
It's fast paced, well balanced, will run on older hardware and has nice 2D graphics. _________________ Want Free games?

well with starcraft or warcaft 3 if your willing to play, depends on what you like, starcraft is mainly macromanagement and placement of buildings and such where warcraft3 is mainly micromanagement. I personally like wc3 better because I can use my l337 tactix to oust someone with almost five times the amount of power as me if I use my units well. I've won 4v1 by doing things such as rushing in with ground and lettting them get slaughteres but taking out all his anti air as all my air is taking out thier anti air producing buildings and then own them by air. Or like using a spell to kill some long ranged people next to spellcasters and then resurecting skeles to slice through the weak casters like a hot nife through butter. Starcraft is ok, I just am a lot lot worse at it. Warcraft 3 = lvl 16 random char, starcraft = like... 1.5 silver stars . War3 also takes care of a lot of the auto casts for you, makes it easier to do things. |

There is but one true RTS, and its name is Total Annihilation.
I implore everyone to go get this game as fast as they possibly can. Just don't get Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, because it sucks donkey balls
TA pioneered things like build queues, command queues, configurable AI for units (aggressivenes etc.) and of course earth-shaking, planet-pounding explosions
It is not rare that a good game of TA ends up being a full head-on arms rush. 1 nuke per side like in other RTS games? Try 15! And sometimes, that's a low number. The sheer massive scale of this game is not to be underestimated. And of course, you've got your massive artillery guns, your loads of expendable units, your all-powerful Commander and of course your building-sized 4-fusion-plants-requiring gatling cannons
Get Total Annihilation and the Core Contingency expansion pack. The music alone is well worth it. Classical music and destruction go so well together. _________________ War. War never changes. |

glob2 can run without opengl! So if you have X you can play it. Just run with:
Or did I missed the question ?
And the alpha 15 will be out very soon, and now the explo can make damage to the other explo, and they get xp, and warrior too, and we worked on armor balances, and the fruits now make your warrior fat, and we fixed a but which prevented to save edited maps, and many thing I can't remember! And yes we'r still working on it!
And we fixed a bug which prevented it to be working on 16-bit depth display correctly.
Come an play on YOG, we like to see people playing this game! |

yeah, im fuag from the forums I left a while ago in muddy water because I Realized that its really not a time in my life that I can spend all of it developing a copy of an old game, if we were actually making a new game, it prolly woulda been different, im just not enough of a halo fanboy anymore i geuss..
Total annihilation looks cool, I remember thinking it looked cool when it first came out but then never picking it up for no real reason, is there a native linux client? |

I guess you'll be keeping a keen eye on the fan-made TA:Spring then. _________________ Want Free games?

Hehe, ah-yup
Though I'm still not convinced about the whole thing being freely 3D. I mean, having the terrain finally fully 3D instead of just 4 levels of height (submerged, surface, high ground and flying) is going to be great, I just don't like 3D cameras and such.
For now, I'm sticking with standard TA, Core Contingency, Battle Tactics, the official downloadable units and the 500 unit patched totala.ini. It's 0ld-sk00l, and I'm loving it. _________________ War. War never changes. |

if I'm not right, I'll sound like an idiot, but
is this the same lemi from the infoceptor forums?
as for strategy games, wesnoth is one of the best I've played. Otherwise, go with wine and use starcraft _________________ Sysadmin of Ubuntu systems and servers....

TA is the best.
The interface is far better interface than Starcraft, though I understand people like Starcraft's variety of races more (I personally couldn't care less, interface is paramount in an RTS) |
