OK. I have searched the forums here and tried just about everything. Here is what I have:
System Info

I also have ENABLED support for PCI-Express. When I say ENABLED, i mean that it was compiled into the kernel. |
Kernel compiles fine and I boot into it. Next I "emerge ati-drivers" to dl and install the latest drivers. Driver version is 8.12.10(the latest I believe). OK. Now I run "fglrxconfig" to generate a xorg.conf file. This completes correctly (however it says the gfx card was not detected as one from the list). Nevertheless, it still generates a completed xorg.conf file. The ati mobility X700 is support by the ati-drivers(i dont know why fglrxconfig doesn't detect it). ANYWAYS. the fglrx module loads(i think) as dmesg shows the following:

Cool, dunno what a tainted kernel is, but it says the module was loaded (lsmod shows fglrx). Now, to my xorg.conf

OK. then I switch to opengl ati drivers or whatever by running 'opengl-update ati'. Now I try to run startx (X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and the screen goes black and stays this way. I cannot ATL CTRL DEL or ATL CTRL BCKSPACE. I am forced to manually reboot the computer. I have tried the following changes to xorg.conf. I have added 'ChipID 0x5653' (code for mobility x700). I have tried 'MonitorLayout (AUTO, AUTO), (LVDS, AUTO), and (LVDS, TMDS).' I have tried UseInternalAGPGART ("yes"), and ("no"). The same thing happens everytime. lspci yields the following:

SO. The kernel sees the card. fglrxconfig doesn't ID the card. xorg crashes like it's its job, and my head hurts. I have searched google/forums and found nothing that worked. I followed WEDGE'S ATI guide initially. xorg log file has many many lines like the following:
(II) fglrx(0): Not using default mode "1234x5678" (bad mode clock/interlace/double scan)
or
(II) fglrx(0): Not using default mode "1234x5678" (hsync out of range)
or
(II) fglrx(0): Not using default mode "1234x5678" (vrefresh out of range)
It has many many of these lines for each possible mode (ABCD x ABCD). So I am assuming that my vrefresh and hsync values are not valid??? I was unable to find the values (google and manual had nothing). The LCD is a Chunghwa CLAA150PB01 15inch SXGA+ (1400x1050). Here is the only website I could find with any info:

Nothing looked like a vrefresh or hsync value. I am waiting to hear back from the reseller of my notebook about obtaining the possible information. Does anyone know what is causing my XORG not to work properly and how I can fix it??? Any help is appreciated. Thank you |

You are using the internal AGPGART module and are compiling AGPGART support into your kernel. The two are going to conflict, so you need to choose one. If you are going to use the kernel AGPGART driver you need to change the option | Code: | | Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes" |
near the bottom or your xorg.conf to "no". In reality you shouldn't need any AGPGART support since you are using a PCI-e card.
If you still have problems please post lines beginning with (EE) and other information that looks relavent to the errors from you /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

OK i set UseInternalAGPGART to yes, same thing happened. I ran cat /var/lolg/Xorg.0.log | grep '(EE)' and that didn't return anything(no (EE) lines are in Xorg.0.log). The only thing I see that looks like an error is the following:
(II) fglrx(0): Not using default mode "1400x1050" (hsync out of range)
1400x1050 is resolution I have set in xorg.conf (it is the default res for my LCD). Like I said, I was unsure of the hsync and vrefresh rates for my LCD, however I felt I choose resonable values for a typical sxga+ LCD. Any ideas?? |

Try using ddcxinfo-knoppix to probe your monitor and find out the horizontal and vertical refresh rates. It's available in portage.
