need help getting sn41g2 and dhcp running

i just got a shuttle sn41g2 v2 and i need some help getting the networking running. i have used FC before, but never really done any kernel work, so i am not too sure what to do. when i run ifconfig eth0, i receive:

eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

so what do i need to do to get my network working? i followed all the instructions in the handbook (as far as dhcp set up goes).
