hi

i just installed gentoo and like many newbies i cant get alsa sound to work. I've tried everything. No errors, no warnings, but no sound at all. I compiled the alsa drivers as modules in my kernel for my sound card (snd-intel8x0). I have it in the autoload modules directory.

I have an Asus p4vm series motherboard with onboard intel sound.

lspci output (for sound card)
Code:

0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

lsmod gives me this
Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
i915                   17632  -
drm                    59988  -
w83781d                33384  -
eeprom                  5552  -
i2c_sensor              2752  -
i2c_isa                 1568  -
i2c_i801                9836  -
i2c_core               17632  -
snd_pcm_oss            48544  -
snd_mixer_oss          17504  -
snd_seq_oss            34784  -
snd_seq_midi_event      6176  -
snd_seq                51888  -
snd_seq_device          7052  -
snd_intel8x0           29408  -
snd_ac97_codec         80312  -
snd_pcm                83940  -
snd_timer              21252  -
snd                    47012  -
snd_page_alloc          7492  -

dmesg has this

Code:

intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 50133 usecs
intel8x0: clocking to 48000

and my /etc/modules.d/alsa looks like this

Code:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
##  ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
##  OSS/Free portion
## alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
##  OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1

my setup seems to be perfect(imho) and there are no errors, but no sound.

also alsaconf shows the same sound card twice.. i'm pretty sure i have only one Intel onboard soundcard. :-)

help would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance !!

hello again,

my master and PCM settings are on 100% unmuted. No sound with mpg123. I am very frustrated.

However i did get some weird stuff while running alsaconf.

First it shows TWO intel onboard cards(duplicates), and then while suggesting what module i shd use it shows something like

"snd-*** err, liblow.c, Would you like to modify /etc/modules.d/alsa?"

Is there a way to start again CLEAN, i.e. delete everything related to alsa, apart from the kernel modules for my sound card?
What stuff do i have to delete and remerge?
I recompiled the kernel almost 4 times last night, still no luck :-(

It would be great if someone told me what files i need to delete to start fresh, or i'm seriously considering reinstalling gentoo (last resort). 'coz everytime i remerge alsa-utils, my sound settings still remain the same, i.e. mixer volumes, alsaconf showing a duplicate sound card etc.

Please help

RS

hello again,

i would like to point out what an idiot i've been. Finally figured it out. I had plugged my speakers into the wrong jack ( Yes they are color coded  ) They do work with windows coz apparently Soundmax or watever the heck comes with the intel cd automatically routes the sound to ANY jack that the speakers are plugged into; i didnt bother to check that..

so a note to other people like me (PLEASE check which jack your speakers are plugged into  )

thanks to flazz for the quick reply.

If anyone else has an Asus mb with an intel onboard sound card similar to mine, i'd be glad to post my configuration files if its of any help.

now i can finally play music.

Although a little problem again, i am part of the audio group, yet i can't open /dev/dsp. Have to figure that one out. Till then goodbye !

Happy gentoo-ing.

RS
