I have this sort of irritating problem with both Phoenix and Mozilla. I have a 1600x1200 screen, so I use larger font sizes. Usually these display fine when no stylesheet is being used.

I use Phoenix almost all of the time. I have Preferences->Fonts and Colors->Always use my Fonts checked. I am using Arial.

This works fine, but often when a site uses stylesheets, I run into this nasty problem where the browser squishes together lines of text. If I set the font to very small or the default size font (which is far too small for my screen), it looks probably the way it is supposed to.

The specific font I have specified for display in the browser preferences doesn't seem to have any effect; it happens with all fonts.

Here's what I'm talking about; this is from the right sidebar on http://www.c-span.org:

It happens on a lot of sites, and often makes things difficult to read. Selecting any text on such a page renders the page unreadable (the select shading corrupts the screen because of how close the lines are together).

Does anyone else have this problem, or a possible workaround?

Hmm...I don't seem to have that problem.

Your font is blocky..why aren't you using an anti-aliased font? Does Phoenix even support that? See if compiling Mozilla with xft support (if you haven't) and enabling AA fonts fixes it.
