(the other Gnome 2.2 topic was about Gnome 2.2 RC2, so hope final release is worth wasting a new topic on to start from scratch 100% about 2.2 Final,if not, just dup it)
Screenshots to drool over while waiting for ebuilds (fixed link)
No wait, Grab it!
Gnome 2.2 Start Page (especially read the "Known issues" part)

6 months planned schedule release pushed to 5 months - impressive. Man I really like Gnome. I just wish there was a nice GTK2 CDBurning program - i'm currently using gtoaster, and love it, but it seems there's not much development in this area. _________________ -Phil Crosby |

Of course we all realize "the ebuild" is in fact like 20 ebuilds, which are pretty much the same as 2.0.3 except for (hopefully elegantly) dealing with a new dependent tree...so probably going to require a little patience, this is going to take some time. |

On the contrary, I think the 2.2 final ebuilds will be exactly like the 2.2rc2 ebuilds, with small modifications. Any ebuild maker can do this, so I'm sure many users are running 2.2 final at the moment. What we're waiting for is for Spider, or whoever handles the 'official' versions of the gnome ebuilds, to make it into portage. The only thing preventing that is the modification of the ebuilds and of coures testing it and making sure dependencies (now that it will be unmasked) will work fine, and things like upgrading from gnome 2.0.3
Since gnome takes forever to compile, I'm sure this will be awhile, but not too long (in terms of actually writing up the ebuilds). At least that's my take on it, correct me if I'm wrong.
EDIT: BTW Foser handles the official gnome ebuilds right? _________________ -Phil Crosby

Considering that there are already Gnome 2.2rc2 - ebuilds by both our heroes spider and foser, I'd say it shouldn't take too long.
The improvements are certainly cool, but it's somewhat strange that there still lack some core stable gtk2-apps like a web-browser (galeon and epiphany in development) or a cd-burner (coaster in planning, gtoaster, see above).
Oh well, who cares, we can live with cvs-versions, can't we? |

I just changed the ebuild files
To unmask gnome RC2 just delete all those references to it in /usr/portage/profile/package.mask _________________ The road to Perfection is too rocky ! Consider Linux as home delivery service. |

I really hope the random theme-selector program breaking is fixed. Almost everyone in the Gnome2.2 thread had that problem. I didn't have it at first but it developed later for some reason. |

My theme selector on 2.2rc2 worked, for once, and it worked great. If you had this problem and are running 2.2rc2, then I doubt it will be fixed, and may be something specific to yoru system. They didn't really change much from rc2 to final as far as I know. _________________ -Phil Crosby |

I did mention on the top post, knowing this theme manager issue would surface, to read the "Known Issues" part (of the release notes section)...
Gnome 2.2 Release Notes - Known Issues wrote: | FAM bugs can cause Theme Manager hangs
In some cases, problems with FAM can cause the new Theme Manager to hang. For more information, see bug 103797. |
The r1 release of the latest fam-oss in Gentoo fixed all my FAM troubles I've had, it's been rock solid ever since so if you have that one and still experience this I suggest you give that bug a peek, perhaps you can help fix/debug the bugs occurance. _________________ Gentoo | AMD X2 3800+ 2GB RAM | Kernel 2.6.30 . I have the same question as smeagol: I don't have it in portage either. Does Spider mean that if we emerge gnome-2.2_rc2, we actually get gnome-2.2? Or should I rsync once more... Do you guys really have an ebuild gnome-2.2.ebuild or like me still a gnome-2.2_rc2.ebuild? |

I have a gnome-2.2_rc2-r99.ebuild in my rsync finally.
Not sure if this is it or not.
the changelog references a r98 version for today.. (typo perhaps..)
Code: |
*gnome-2.2_rc2-r98 (05 Feb 2003)
05 Feb 2003; Spider <spider@gentoo.org> gnome-2.2_rc2-r98.ebuild :
sharpened up all deps, fixed the gnome-system-monitor (duplicate and wrong
version) and added gnome-mime-data
this is 2.2.0 pre-release internal gentoo

Hi
People have patience those are outdated ebuilds for the RC2.
The maintainer for Gnome is Foser. I'm sure I'll include the 2.2 final ebuilds in portage as soon has possible.
By the way this is my Gnome-2.2 Shot http://pwp.netcabo.pt/yoannez/linux/index.html _________________ The road to Perfection is too rocky ! Consider Linux as home delivery service.

But Naba said: "Gnome 2.2 is already in portage." And on the website of spiderhttp://cvs.gentoo.org/~spider/ it also looks like it already is. The people who are already emerging, what is the exact version of your gnome-ebuild? |

The gnome ebuild is just a list saying install all these packages gnome-2.2_rc2-r99 is installing the same versions of packages that are listed on the gnome site as the 2.2 release. And if you read the change log it says, its an internal gentoo test release for people to test to make sure that gnome 2.2 emerges successfully |

r99 is gnome 2.2 only there are a few minor issues that need fixing before i want to put 2.2 in there for 'everybody' masked for testing. So if you compile this then in a few hours you probably have to update a few more libs and you should be fine.
The fam/gnome-theme-manager issue is a known problem, both to us and the gnome hackers. It seems to depend on the amount of themes you have around if you will see it. Stopping fam will make the gnome-theme-manager run, it is annoying but there's nothing much we can do about it right now besides waiting for it to get fixed (feel free to hack around, it is after all opensource ). _________________ Gentoo Gnome Desktop team |
