|
|
I have had no major problems so far with the 64bit ati drivers, but when I do alt-ctrl-Fx to switch between consoles and my X server, the X server becomes visually corrupted. It doesn't freeze, but I just can't read any text on the menus or buttons and usually kill the xserver with alt-ctrl-backspace. Once it restarts, it is fine. I don't switch between consoles that often, but I am wondering if there is a way to prevent the X server corruption when I do?
Questions:
1.) Where would I find a good howto on setting up the s-video output and a separate X server? EDIT: My laptop has a 1280x800 LCD, but the max tv-out resolution is 1024x768, so I either need to have a separate X server or be able to output my dekstop on the regular server at 1024x768
2.) Is there a way to overclock the mobility Radeon 9700 in Linux? Under Windows, the ATI drivers have a power management system which adjusts clock speeds between battery and ac levels just like cpufreqd would with the cpu. I don't need fast 3D power under gentoo, so I want to actually underlcock the card to conserve power and keep it cooler. _________________ It's all funny until someone gets hurt.

TerranAce007,
In regards to the ctrl-alt-Fx problem, what version of ati-drivers are you using? Under x86 the older drivers will do what you described. Only with the later drivers, 8.12.10 for sure and possibly 8.10.19, did this problem get fixed. I suspect the same is true for the 64bit drivers -- I don't have a 64 bit system myself. _________________ Vim has excellent syntax highlighting for configuration files: emerge gentoo-syntax

TerranAce007,
Do you have onboard-video instead of a video card? Version 8.13.3 is actually for onboard chips sets, not PCI/AGP video cards -- at least that's what I read in another forum thread last night. _________________ Vim has excellent syntax highlighting for configuration files: emerge gentoo-syntax

It seems that the ATI radeon driver does not like the card to be touched by anything but itself. I had this problem aswell. I got rid of it by turning framebuffer support off in kernel (and probably other radeon/gfx-card related stuff, I'm sorry I don't remember, it was quite a long time ago). But I cannot use those fancy vesa text modes now, only some 80x50 basic mode (or 132x50? don't know _________________ I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes or should I? |
