I've recently installed Gentoo on my iBook, and got everything working, exept for this problem:
I can't play mp3s with the arts sound sysem, but the strange thing is that ogg vorbis files works perfectly. I've tried the different players that comes with KDE (JuK, Noatun) but they produce the same result as the artsplay command: just noise. And when trying to use XMMS whit the arts output plugin, xmms crashes. But the strange thing is that Mplayer manages to play mp3's, but that's got to be because it uses some other decoding software, right?

If i shut down the arts sound system, and uses mpg123, ogg123 or xmms my mp3's plays just fine.

Could this be some problem with the decoding software built into arts, and if so, can I in some way rebuild it?

I have not used ARTS so this is a guess.

Did you have mp3 in your USE flags when you emerged arts?

More specifically, (and it's in the handbook), check your /etc/make.conf file, and add (to) USE="mp3"

See:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=2

http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml

for an in-depth explanation. DO READ THESE because the are really, very, truly important in things Gentoo.
