Hi everyone,

I just got a UML host pre-installed with CentOS 4, however I have taken too much a liking for Gentoo Linux, so I was wondering how to go about installing it. I have a dedicated IP and full root ssh access of course, however, I haven't got physical access.

So any tips on how to install Gentoo straight out of SSH?

Thanks :)

I've never personally done it, but it should be possible.

The main problem would be the chroot environment. I'm not sure how ssh would work over that so I would just try unpacking and chrooting over to see if it will work. You may have to mount some of your old filesystem over to the new to keep ssh up, but like I said I've never tried it so it might just work.

A word of caution: keep hammers and other destructive objects out of reach during this process if you want to keep your keyboard intact

Right, I will try it. After all, I can always get my host to install Fedora Core 3 on it again :)

I'll post any problems I come across here.

Now I know why one should NEVER use the "rm -rf *" function... I ran out of disk space...

Try again...

You mean, out of files. rm is remove, rm -rf * means remove everything recursively from your current position in the filesystem. When done as root from / that means everything on the disk.
