Posted: Sun May 22, 2005 8:41 pm Post subject: No network on new gentoo 2.6 setup... please help! |
|
|
Hi, all...
I have just installed linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r9 as a dual boot with win xp on my IBM T30 laptop. I succeeded in getting the dual boot to work, but I failed to get an active network connection. I feel I probably configured the kernel wrong, but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this.
My final lines of buffer output on reboot are like this: Code: | * Starting pcmcia...
cardmgr[5339]: no sockets found!
* cardmgr failed to start. Make sure that you have PCMCIA
* modules built or support compiled into the kernel..........[ !! ]
* Bringing eth0 up via DHCP..................................[ !! ]
*ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
* "netmount" was not started. |
I checked for eth0: Code: | # ifconfig eth0
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found |
My lshw situation is as follows: Code: | chuxtux

I don't know what to do next. The laptop has both an ethernet option as well as a linksys wireless pcmcia card. Either one working would do as a start.
Anyone willing to share some thoughts on this??

did you compile your network driver as a module? |

Gherald...
Hi, once again...
No, not as a module. _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |

I think you need =y, given:
Code: | *-network UNCLAIMED

I'll try with that configured in... Why did you first ask about being configured as a module? _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |

module is =m
in that case, you would need to "modprobe e100" and put "e100" in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 for it to be loaded at boot
( lsmod shows currently loaded modules, btw ) |

I'm having difficulty locating CONFIG_E100 in my kernel...
When found, is it better as a module?
Ahh... found it... module or built in?
Thanks... _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen

you can just edit .config manually...
but through make menuconfig, it is under Device Drivers -> Network -> Ethernet 10mbit or 100mbit -> Intel something or other
module vs. builtin is kinda a matter of taste. Builtin is simpler, I'd go with that till you're more familiar with linux. |

Good... I'll give it a try and repost...
I'm fearful of many other possible omissions from the kernel setup...
Thanks, once again for helping! _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |

Gherald...
Network is functioning!! You are terrific! Thanks, once again!!
My next project will be the pcmcia bit: Code: | * Starting pcmcia...
cardmgr[5339]: no sockets found!
* cardmgr failed to start. Make sure that you have PCMCIA
* modules built or support compiled into the kernel..........[ !! ] |
Any thoughts on that?? _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |
