I'm something of a n00b. I've worked with UNIX (Solaris) some, and just recently Linux. I feel the only way to learn is to get in and start playing with it. I've used several of the major distros, but I think they do a little too much for me. So I've decided to try Gentoo. Now I'm having some troubel so I've come for help.
My system is;
Adaptec 19160
1 Seagate Cheetah drive
1 Seagate Barracuda drive
1 Plextor 20x CD
1 Teac (?) 6x/24x CDR
AMD K6-2 450
256mb SDRAM
Leadtek Nvidia MX200 video
3Com NIC
I've loaded 2 versions of RedHat (7.2 and , and Mandrake 9. Bot loaded and ran fine. After playing with them for a time, I wasn't learning as much as I thought I could, so I decieded to give Gentoo a try. I'm using a stage 2 1.4_rc2 CD. The CD boots fine, and I can go through the complete installation with no problems. I compile the kernel with the aic7xxx drivers, scsi CD and HD support.
However, after compiling, and restarting, the system hangs during startup when it comes to the scsi hardware. I see the lights on the CDs flashing like they're being scanned, then nothing. No error code, nothing at all. I've left it sit for several minutes thinking that it might be slow in finding everything.
On a side note, is the AMD K6-2 processor considered an i586 or i686?
Thanks in advance for any help. _________________ If only Bill Gates had a nickel for every time Windows crashes. Oh wait, he does...... |

you might want to try the alternative aic7xxx drivers. Other than that, make sure you have all of the scsi options that you need turned on (scsi generic, scsi cdrom, etc) not that that -should- matter...
the k6-2 is compatible with an i686, but you can specifiy the K6/K6-II/K6-III family in the kernel itself, and "-march=k6-2" for your CFLAGS in gentoo's /etc/make.conf
(i686, btw, is pentium pro level) _________________ Everyone has something clever for a signature but me. |
