this is the kind of situation that makes me hate gnome... :cry: :cry: i emerged gnome, started it but it complains because of the lack of a gnome-compliant windows-manager... hence i emerged metacity but I could't find one piece of useful information as how to get gnome to use metacity rather than that horrible twm thing... any clue? thanks in advance for your help

Edit /etc/rc.conf and remove the # from the line #XSESSION="Gnome"

I'm not using gnome right now so I'm guessing on some of the applications names etc ..

* open gnome-session-manager
* click your wm and select trash in the dropdown box
* killall yourwm && yournewwm&
* go back to your session manager and select the right option (can't reclall) from the drop down box
* restart gnome and it should use yournewwm
