My system has been randomly freezing for a while now. I have not been able to figure out what is causing this, although I have tried several distros before Gentoo (including RedHat/Fedora, SuSE, and Mandrake) with the same problems. Sometimes I'll be running Gaim, sometimes FireFox, sometimes Valknut (direct connect client), or some other program. I'll even leave it on with my user account logged in but without opening anything for several hours, and sometimes it will still freeze. If I let it get above 33 degrees C according to my case's thremometer, it will crash, but that's only when I leave the cover on; uaually I have it off. (See below) I have not been able to reproduce it other than with the heat issue mentioned.
I am posting my system components with the hope that someone with a similar configuration will be able to shed some light on this:
Tyan Tiger MPX mobo
512 MB Kingston PC2100 unbuffered RAM
500 Watt Codegen PSU
Two AMD MP 2800 processors, with supplied heatsinks and fans
120 GB Western Digital HD
M Audio Delta 44 sound card
nVidia Gforce4 MX 440 AGP vid card
Western Digital CD ROM drive
In addition, here is my make.conf:
Code: |
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built
this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=athlon-mp -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="oss -kde -arts ogg gnome gtk gtk+-2.0 qt alsa mp3 cdr"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"
PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo/"
ALSA_CARDS="ice1712"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage
PORTAGE_NICENESS="19"

I have thought that this could be a heat issue, and I have the cover off. I have a thremometer on my case, and have the element on one of the processor heat sinks. I also open the window in the room where this box is located, which brings the temp to about 25 degrees C on a cool day, yet still it occasionally crashes. Other than this, the only other issue I can think of is the use of unbuffered RAM; after Googling I learned of people having problems with this type on the Tyan boards. Anyone have any ideas, or at least similar hardware configs?
Thanks for any help. ![Rolling Eyes :roll:](images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) |
