|
|
I recently started a self-study summer course at my university. The problem is that one of the important documents is a password protected Word file. I know the password but OOo just refuses to open the document claiming that "Password-protected files cannot be opened.."
I'm using Open Office Ximian 1.3.8.
I wonder if there's any other way to open this document on my home computer? _________________ [size=9]We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

You might try Abiword. If I recall correctly, it used to open password protected Word files after prompting for the password. I can't guarantee success, but good luck.
Quick update: I just tried this. Abiword happily accepted a password and opened a passworded Word '97 doc, but hung while trying to open a protected Word XP doc. Hope this helps.
Another update: I have the OpenOffice beta (1.9.79) installed on one of my home machines, so I tried it when I got home from the office. It opened the passworded Word XP document after prompting for the password. It took about 30 seconds to open the document and I thought it might have hung up. It eventually worked, though. If Abiword doesn't work for you, you might want to try the OpenOffice beta.

For those who don't want to download the whole editor:
It's the very library that Abiword uses, it runs from console, is <1MB and converts .doc files to many formats (plaintext, html, pdf, and more). Worth recommending. _________________ Contact:
