New user of gentoo , just started with the livecd install.
Working through the documentation and the install.

I dont have a connection to the internet and when
I tried a stage1 install, it fails trying to connect.
After some fumbling it seems that stage3 is
the method when a network connection is
not present. Just like to confirm this and
am wondering why it is not mentioned in the
documentation or at least I couldnt find it.

You can install gentoo with stage3.

If I remember correctly there is an install readme file on the livecd to help you install it. Use the stage3 install and you should be all set. Also follow the directions for the GRP which is for the packages and distfiles so that you can install the basic apps that are on the livecd (ie.. mozilla, window manager, etc...)

Hope that helps and gets you in the right direction.

Sad but true, I only have a dialup connection to the internet.

Also my cd is from 2004, but I am just starting with
learning how to install gentoo. Once I get through
the process I will get a more up to date cd.

While installing I am using another terminal ALT + F2
to read the documentation.

Thanks for the confirmation that stage3 is the correct
method for installing gentoo without a network connection.
