i am having a problem that is causing me all sorts of troubles. the issue is that my root partition goes into read only mode at random times (actually only when i am emerging something).
i am using an sata drive and have already rma'd one thinking it was the drive but it seems that it is an issue with my install. i have used the vendors (seagate) tool to verify the integrity of the drive and it reports that nothing is wrong.
what are the things that i can do to test my root partition. i need to upgrade/install software and everytime i do it fails cause the filesystem (ext3) changes to read only mode .

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but sometimes small things are overlooked. Is the user [that you use when you emerge things and get this error] in the portage group? If not, I think that will cause problems. Never had experience with this myself so I can't verify, but here's what I get when I try to emerge something when I'm not logged in as root:
Code: |
*** You are not in the Portage group. You may experience cache problems
*** due to permissions preventing the creation of the on-disk cache.
*** Please add this user to the portage group if you wish to use portage.

thanks for your reply, but in this case I have been doing everything as root. Plus I do not think it has anything to do with emerging. It is just a coincident that it only happens while I am emerging, because emerging is a high I/O operation and my normal work does not require me to do too much disk bound stuff. |
