I am looking for a low-budget (under 20$ if possible) 56k modem which works without problems on linux.
I need the following features (not much, but still):
- A phone output jack
- Volume control
Any suggestions? |

Only one advice: buy an external modem. Internal modems are just plain garbage, and most of them are winmodems, that are not modems, just a way to have a hole to plug your phone cable, the real modem is the driver.
External modems usually works well. Serial ones are better suported, and most of them will run w/o problems because dont need a stupid driver.
I own a mentor v90 compliante modem, that has a conexant chipset. And works great, w/o any problem, just included the serial support in my kernel and voilà! |

make sure it is a external serial modem in stead of a usb modem. I think some usb modems are winmodems and some people have trouble with usb (think of all the problems people have with mice and scanners and stuff). |

Linux has a good support into the vanilla kernel for usb modems that are acm compliant, which are most, but not all.
So, if you decide to buy a usb device make sure it is acm compatible, if you don't want to get bothered with this, just buy a serial modem. It's the easiest solution. And if you decide to buy an usb acm modem then you will have to load the acm compatibility module into the kernel, it is somewhere under the usb configuration, you should have no trouble to find it. |

Thanks for the suggestions, but external modems are a bit too expensive for me at the moment, especially since I'll only need it for the summer... |
