Have a look in /var/tmp, are there any files matching Ex*? These are probably the session files of which Vi speaks.

Thanks boomslanger, but...
under /var/tmp there have no Ex* file, there only have elvis1.ses and elvis2.ses, when I delete all the file and start using vi again, then the message come out again.

Code:

root@localhost#vi abc123
skipping 1 old session file
reading abc123
Read abc123, 4 lines, 46 chars

      problem still exists... pls, help
...

but when I using ssh to login and run vi, then it work fine, didn't have that error.
Please, give me more tips, Thanks... Thanks.

there are going to be some more "elvis*.ses" files hanging around somewhere, try your home directory.

the file you are looking for is probably named .yourfilename.swp

delete this hidden file to get rid of the problem. to prevent it from happeing again, you should close vi with it's own comands ( :q , :q!, :wq ...), and NOT by closing the terminal where it runs. otherwise, vi will not be closed properly, and will leave the kind of file it is warning you about.

and I switch to text mode with same user, then vi was work fine, didn't happen the problem, but when I switch to X, then run vi on RXVT, the problem come out
Code:

root@localhost#vi abc
abc [NEW FILE]

asdfasjlf
asfjasflsja;lfa
askfasjl;f

Is this problem releated to the RXVT, I am using RXVT-unicode-5.5.

Dear all,
I fix the problem, because the link of vi is not link to vim, it linked to elvis, so when I change the link to vi that's correct, everything work fine. Thanks all to answer my question. Thanks.
