HELLO, This is my first post for any GNU/linux distro. Please be patient with me. :) Thanks
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not know where this post should go, INSTALLING GENTOO, Desktop Environments, or Portage and Programming.

I am new to GENTOO and stuck on page 80 of the handbook: "emerge --usepkg kde." It always fails. (So, yes this is a new install. And this is my first text install of linux. I had mighty trouble with grub, and still did not resolve that, but I just used lilo for now.)

Side note: when I boot into GENTOO my nic has not connection to my dhcp??, so I have chroot from MEPIS to do things.

Code:
/bin/sh ../libtool --silent --mode=link --tag=CXX i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++  -Wnon-virtual-dtor -Wno-long-long -Wundef -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wconversion -Wchar-subscripts -Wall -W -Wpointer-arith -Wwrite-strings -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -O2 -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -Wformat-security -Wmissing-format-attribute -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -fno-common  -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -fexceptions   -o kimg_tiff.la -rpath /usr/kde/3.3/lib/kde3 -module -avoid-version -export-symbols-regex 'kimgio_.*_(read|write)' -no-undefined -Wl,--no-undefined -Wl,--allow-shlib-undefined -L/usr/lib -L/usr/qt/3/lib -L/usr/kde/3.3/lib  tiffr.lo -ltiff -ljpeg -lz -lqt-mt  -lz -lpng -lz -lm -lXext -lX11  -lSM -lICE -lpthread

That is part of it. If you need the whole verbose I can post the file.

I even have done emerge --sync, env-update, and emerge -e system. "emerge -e system" fails too.
Code:
!!! ERROR: sys-apps/groff-1.19.1-r2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 90, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

If you give advice, please give instructions.

Gentoo Frequently Asked Question #18: Emerge fails after upgrading gcc. libstdc++.la missing
Checking the FAQ forum's never a bad idea ;-).
Happy emerging.
