kdm is working fine, I can log in. Then comes the splash screen. It begins but can't progress. Then the splash screen disappear and the blue kde-3.4 background remains.
I remerged the whole kdebase but the problem persists.
My system was working fine until I updated the system last friday with the command :
Code:
emerge --sync

and
Code:
emerge -uDavt world

thanks for any help !

I have the same exact problem after an "emerge update --deep world"! I can actually get into kde from an Xterm, but I have to keep the term open. Did you try this fix yet? If you got it to work, could you please post it with a summarization of the steps involved( I'm a noob, be kind!!)

Hi folks,

In your emerge, did any of you emerge baselayout? If you did and you used etc-update without taking care, you very well might have wiped out the parts of /etc/rc.conf that get KDM and KDE up. Make sure that in /etc/rc.conf DISPLAYMANAGER is set to "kdm" and XESSION is set to "kde-x.x.x" where x.x.x is the version (3.4.1 on my machine.)

I had excactly that problem when I had an error in my hosts file. My localhost couldn't be resolved. Check that too :-/

I double-checked in /etc/rc.conf, DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" was set as well as XSESSION="kde-3.4.1", which was one of the first things I checked when this happened. Still have the same issue, anything else I could try??

thanks to all of you for helping me.

- i tried to rm /var/tmp/kdecache-username and /tmp/kde-username and ~/.ICEAutorithy.

- in /etc/rc.conf, i also changed XSESSION variable to "kde-3.4.1"
(is it correct to use
Code:
kde-config -v
to get the version of KDE?)

it's unfortunately still not successful :-(

does anyone have another idea ?

I had the same problem (it persisted after downgrading the baselayout).
The problem was solved for me when I started the /etc/init.d/net.lo script (starts the local loopback I guess).

regards,
Tom.

I have another question... perhaps it is in the direction of the answer...

when i run :
Code:
kde-config -v

it tells me :
KDE: 3.4.1

but in /etc/X11/Sessions/
the file is kde-3.4 and not kde-3.4.1 !!!!

Is this related to my problem?

In my case the start-up of KDE stopped at the "initializing system services" step. The bootsplash disappeared, but after a long time (5 minutes) the rest of kde still came up. Maybe if the same is true in you case, your local loopback is somehow not configured? Does the "lo" show if you run /sbin/ifconfig?

Also, some of my earlier KDE-problems have been resolved by renaming my .kde/ directory (in your home, where the user's kde conf files are stored). When restarting KDE, this directory with all it's default content is automaticly recreated.

Tom.

i have exactly this problem except that even after 5 minutes, KDE is not up. i can only see the kde starting blue background.

i tried what you proposed :

- i renamed .kde to .kde_old and .kde-3.4 to kde-3.4_old. the program KPersonalizer started, i configured kde but the problem persists (KDE doesn't start).

- i checked /sbin/ifconfig. lo is started (inet addr: 127.0.0.0 Mask:255.0.0.0)

i still really need help !
thanks to all of you !

$ echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc

and Uncomment XSESSION variable

/etc/X11/Sessions/kde-3.4 is ok (no 3.4.1)

as root:
comment out XSESSION=(xyz) in /etc/rc.conf with a #

as normal user (not at root):

rm -f ~/.ICEauthority
rm -f ~/.Xauthority
rm -f ~/.xsession

Then quote here the ouput of commands i've asked today

(come on!!!! :wink:)

You don't have the right environment variables...
emerge kde-env

it creates this env file /etc/env.d/99kde-env

When it's created (it could be possible it doesn't start with 99, so look for any ##kde-env file) post here its contents

anyway it should be somthing like

Code:
KDEDIRS=/usr/kde/3.4:/usr
CONFIG_PROTECT=/usr/share/config
KDE_MALLOC=1
#KDE_IS_PRELINKED=1
PATH=/usr/kde/3.4/bin
ROOTPATH=/usr/kde/3.4/bin
