Did you any chance have nautilus or another desktop running? You can always start it, xfdesktop &, by hand and save the session when you exit. |

It sounds like you "lost" whatever app xfce4 was using to manage the root window (for example, if you have gnome installed starting nautilus will give you the background you use in gnome and the standard gnome right-click menu, even when not running gnome). If you can find out what xfce4 uses for this, you should be able to restart it.
Also, xfce4 uses the .cache directory as well as .config. Maybe try deleting both of these? _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

Try running `xfdesktop` from a temrinal. If you can't access this from a panel shortcut, you can use the ALT+F2 keyboard shortcut to bring up a "Run..." dialog from which you can run xterm or aterm or whatever you prefer. If you then quite Xfce it should save that in your session. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

I had (have?) exaclty the same problem. It seems to have started when I booted up Evolution which I haven't used in quite a time.
Now, whenever I start xfce4, a bunch of evolution programs start up in the background. Killing them off and running "xfdesktop" as detailed seems to do the trick.
1. Can you point me where the session details of xfce4 are kept so I cna run through them and ensure Evolution is removed?
2. Is this a bug in Evolution? or xfce4?
[EDIT]
Don't know whether this is to do with Evolution or not - seems xfdesktop had just died as I did all the above and restarted the session and all working again now - although still with the Evolution stuff in the background
Thanks

MrSums | Logout of xfce and remove the directory ~/.cache/sessions (or better rename it to something else). Then relogin, and you should have a new "default" session running |
