Okay i'm confused?

Where is my USE thingy? Is it a config file(i did a search of my system with kfind and came up with nothing)

I see a lot of posts saying how you have to have this&that in your USE settings but don't know what it is.

I looked to see if there was a man page for it but there doesn't appear to be one.

I'm stumped!

Your USE settings are in /etc/make.conf, and your CFLAGS too (to set optimizations, i.e. -march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe ....)

Damn that was a fast reply-i only went downstairs to look at my wifes new matrix2 winamp skin-not a patch on my glandamp skin!

Okay i just had a look at /etc/make.conf
My question is what flag would i put in for a Pentium4,or would the Pentium3 flag be sufficent?

Thanks mate!

Here you'll find useful informations.

Also this is the thread for CFLAGS.

Well my flags were only set to i686,so it seems i've compiled my whole system this way :(

I guess i'm losing out on a lot of cpu power.I've now changed it to pentium4 but i think this will only affect future installed ebuilds.
Does this also affect progs i install the conventional way (./configure make & make install)?

Would it benefit me to do a re-install using the flag(i really don't want to as i only have an isdn line)?

Your settings will affect every package you compile from the time you setted them.

About optimizations, if you want you can rebuild your whole system.
You don't need to download the packages again since they should be in /usr/portage/distifiles. Do
Code:
# emerge -ef world

to check if all the packages are there.
Then do
Code:
# emerge -e world

And wait.

It is yours to decide.

You might want to emerge ufed and play with it before you do an emerge -e world.

its a nice little USE flags editor.. easier than remembering what each little settin g does :-)

Okay i did it.Everything was fine until i rebooted then my Xserver went down.As you can see it wont load the Nvidia kernel.I've tried to unmerge the kernel & glx module then merge them back in again but it still wont work.
I've even tried changing the module "nvidia" to "nv" in the XF86config file and putting a # in front of "load glx" but it still wont work.It seems like xfree just aint loading any modules at all.
Should i unmerge xfree then emerge again? It's just that its a big package and will probably take ages(60MB).
Here's my XF86log file:

Problem solved,I have X back(see my posting in multimedia for how i did it)

As for a difference in speed after running "emerge -e world" i can honestly say i can't see any.
I don't think my system is slower or faster

Maybe it's me.I don't know?
