Trying to get rid of PAM.
If I unmerge pam-login, what do I use for /bin/login?
thx
[edit]
A proper /bin/login apparently a part of shadow (can anyone confirm) and should show up when doing an emerge --newuse world (after putting -pam the USE in make.conf)
As far as the audio problem, putting the username that a user logs in as into the 'audio' group lets that user use audio. May be the same for things like cdrecording and such. Not to mention hal and ivman. Not that far along yet. Cross that bridge, etc etc.

hm. I unmerged pam-login at work, and still have an /bin/login, everything except su (expected) and audio (unexpected) appears to work. So it's obviously something borked with my machines at home. Will explore further. _________________ Anyone who puts a small gloss on a fundamental technology, calls it proprietary, and then tries to keep others from building on it, is a thief.

you probably need to reemerge anything which used pam without the pam flag. _________________ geek by nature, linux by choice
