Depends on what stage.
Stage 1 = hours and hours
Stage 3 = minutes (If you know what you're doing ) |

if you follow the handbook, a stage 3 install should take you a couple of hours. but this is just for the base system, so you still have to install xorg and any kind of de/wm afterwards. this can take quite long (ie. if you are planning to compile kde!), unless you go for the GRP install. after that you will need to edit some config files and you will need to set up everything to your likings.
it is possible to install gentoo within one or two hours, if you really know what you are doing. but if this is your first gentoo install, you should rather plan a weekend for it. there are lots of docs to read and it just takes some time to learn even the basic ropes of gentoo.
so it rather depends on your experience than your system specs!
but keep in mind, that if you take your time, you will learn quite a lot, and that will pay off later on. it just doesn't make much sense to rush through the install process - take your time! because if you do it right, you won't have to do it again unless you want to! |

What do you mean by "install?"
If you mean a GUI with sound and video working, its going to take a day or so.
If you mean to boot to a console with stage three, a couple of hours.

I keep another web enabled computer near by. Man, I'd hate to do this without the Gentoo forums, my god, it'd be like walking through the desert without water...

Stage 3 + X + Firefox (both binaries from the package CD) == ~1.5 hrs on a PII/350
So yeah... stage 3 == minutes. Use the binaries to get up and running fast then recompile everything in the background. You can play around with some settings and stuff while you wait. Recompiling X (for example) should tahe around 3 hrs, same with FireFox (probably even less though).
Have fun.
BTW. I assume you know what you're gonna be doing and what you want on the comp so... you can follow this to make your life easier. _________________ If someone solves a problem for you say thanks... and put [SOLVED] in the title! |
