I just redid my box and got it up and running again, now I'm trying to get my sound to work. I don't remember having this much trouble last time.

I don't have alsa compiled into my kernel, but I have tried it with it compiled just in-case.

I have followed all the steps in the how-to's that I have read, here on the forums and from the gentoo-WKI how-to
However, I am having a problem when I try to emerge alsa-driver
this is the output I get.

!!! ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.9 failed.

!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

I've looked around at some of the other problems that people were having, but I haven't seen any with the line

Code:
!!! Function econf, Line 485, Exitcode 0

not really sure what that means.

I'm a total n00b
so any help would greatly be appreciated.
thanks guys

Code:
# emerge --info | grep ALSA

Looks like the ALSA_CARDS variable you passing to portage is incorrect. I think it should be should be intel8x0, not snd_intel8x0, but I have never used that driver.. snd_intel8x0 is the name of the module that gets loaded.

alright...I fixed it...UNFORTUNATELY I have no idea what I did to do it.

I tried to echo something into my /etc/make.conf file and accidentally erased the entire file, so I quickly rebuilt it and then I wanted to relook over the errors so I tried to emerge alsa-driver again and the dang thing worked...

if I had to guess I imagine it must have been something in my USE vairables, I only put a couple back into the file, but the rest of the file I had stored what settings I had used...so those are exactly what they had been before.

thanks for your help, sorry I don't know what happened to fix it

Setting the ALSA_CARDS variable in your make.conf will make it so emerging the alsa-driver won't need to compile ALL of the alsa drivers. This is covered in the gentoo docs for setting up alsa. It's far easier than setting that variable in the command line everytime you emerge alsa-driver, and much faster than not setting it at all.

If you had the line ALSA_CARDS="snd_intel8x0" in your make.conf file, that could have been the problem. I think it is supposed to be just intel8x0 (without the snd part). Maybe when you redid the file, you put the line in without the snd.

That error is telling you that alsa-driver can't emerge because it can't find the driver you want it to. Make sure the name of the driver is right.
