It may sound impossible ... but It just happened.
My system wont boot anymore either
First ill give a rundown of what was happening and what I think made it crash.
the system was up for about a month, the last week and 1/2 it was running a distributed.net client for rc-72 (which all shouldnt relly matter)
but.. I started to run an "emerge -u world" without shutting it off ... which also shouldnt relly matter, but .. I think it was when an openGL screensaver for kde kick'd in it crashed... I woke up to a frozen screensaver and no form of response whatsoever.
ctrl+alt+backspace ... F1 ... Delete .... nothing workd at all
so I rebooted and now I get a tonne of error messages that all mension
/var/state/init.d and syntax error's
i ran e2fsck (unmounted) on both /boot and / but still wont' boot
im trying e2fsck -cc right now to see if my hd's are foo-bar'd
anyway.. Any help would be muchly appreciated
btw.. if you need more info like some log file or somethinglike that lemme know and ill post ASAP ... _________________ w0r|)

after you ran -u world and i am betting installed the new baselayout 1.8.6.2 did you get a chance to run etc-update before the crash and hard reboot?
1.8.6.2 has boogs but rebooting the system after a baselayout upgrade without updating the configs would cause what your seein i think. |

nope.. I didnt get a chance to run etc-update ...
I can probably just use a boot cd and chroot an environment to do that right ?
I have a 1.2 cd if that is good enough ... _________________ w0r|)

I have one small problem with the solution in the thread I posted ...
When I run
Code: | mount -n -o remount,rw / |
it just gives me an error
Code: | / not mounted already, or bad option |
