I sometimes hook up to a wifi spot at the library and it is giving me some odd errors, like being able to check mail, but not send it at times. The people at the library are nice, but of little use, and mention linux and their eyes glaze over. So, I am going to have to diagnose this myself. What is a good tool to use to determine whether ports on this wifi link are open or closed?

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought that netstat would only tell you the status of ports on your machine, not the general network. Perhaps I need to give the man page a closer inspection.

Thanks for the suggestions.
