|
|
I just made an install for my p120 laptop (olivetti echos P120E), transfered it over nfs using the livecd, put grub on the mbr but I can't get it to start up...
When the laptop boots it first goes into grub where all my menu entries are displayed correctly.
Then if I press [Enter] the only thing I see is the following text:
Code: | Booting 'Gentoo Linux'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda3
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x181b7b] |
I really don't understand anything about what's going on here... Als tried to boot from GRUB floppy, and also tried others than bzImage (multiple vmlinuz-es).
The system boots fine using my gentoo livecd (i686, 1.4 I think), except for the fact I need to boot with SBM because the laptop doesn't know about booting from CD...
I hope someone can help me or knows what's going on here...
Greetings,

First off make sure the kernel you compiled for the little box isn't compiled for anything newer than a good old Pentium processor. If you compile it for, say, 686/PPro/P2, it is likely it won't boot at all.

Well that was about the first thing I thought that might could have been wrong. I had first set it to Pentium Classic, and the help thing says it's for Pentiums with RDTMC or something, so I thought I might had to take a lower arch so I used 586 and like, and last but not least I did a recompile of the kernel with generic x86 support, but none of those lead to another situation. I also was planning on using an initrd, but that only gives me a line more if I'm right (not home right now). Anyway, the kernel should be fine to boot of a Pentium without mmx support, and the livecd kernel booted too...
I don't know where the problem could be, but I suspect somethings going very wrong because it doesn't give any error message at all...
Besides, I installed on various other systems (3 pc's running gentoo 24/7, all 3 have at least been reinstalled once), and used the exact same install procedure for all those installs...
I can post my grub conf, kernel conf and any other conf if you like, maybe I missed something...
Greetings,

Well I'm still trying stuff here... Meanwhile I noticed the problem has to do with the kernel. I installed LILO to see if it was a GRUB problem, but LILO just does similar stuff... Then I decided to move over the livecd kernel, which is a 2.4.21 kernel, and set up lilo to boot that one, and that did work (in a way).
So it will boot a 2.4 kernel, but it won't boot my 2.6 kernel. The 2.6 does nothing at all, the 2.4 currently stops at the point it wants to run devfsd, because that's not there... So what would be the best thing to do?
The laptop has:
- A pcmcia slot, in which I only use a 3com network card which works great under a 2.4 kernel
- External floppy drive connected to parallel port
- Some cheap shit video card (which does have a connector for external monitor)
IMHO I don't need a 2.6 kernel for these things... So is there anyone here that can tell me if I should just stick with a 2.4 kernel or thinks I really should try to find what's wrong when using the 2.6?

After I finish Installin Grub and rebooted my computer without the disk, the screen is fluttered with the word GRUB. What did I do wrong? How should I fix the error? |

Well first off, if you have a problem don't spam another thread with it... this is not about GRUB errors after all... You just need to look at the GRUB error collection, your error is covered there.
