One desktop feature I'd really like (either Gnome or KDE) is to have the desktop, and optionally panel(s), drawn on a per workspace basis.

That is, I can put some icons or panels on Workspace 1 and when I switch to Workspace 2 I don't seem them, i.e. as things are, icons and panels are considered sticky, and I'd like the option to turn that off.

Why? I like to set up my workspaces to be aimed around different kinds of tasks - e.g. a browsing workspace, a coding workspace, etc. - each with it's own requirements and things I'll want to use when I'm working on that "task".

WindowMaker is the only thing to come close to this as it has it's clip that you can attach icons/launchers to on a workspace by workspace basis. It's a bit long in the tooth though compared to gnome2.2/kde3.1.

Hopefully one day...

Jamie

use em both
instead of using kwin as your windowmanager os metacity, use windowmaker as your
windowmanager. You got the best of both that way (except you will have to find some cool themes for windowmaker to make it fit in the looks.

Waimea will do this. Gnome on one desktop, KDE on another, etc.

Fluxspace will allow you to have different panels on each desktop as well as different desktop wallpapers and icons.

I've not tried fluxbox, maybe it's worth a go.

As for WindowMaker, it only basically does what I'd like, but I'd prefer it if such functionality was built into kde/gnome.
