Hey-
I'm building a media pc/server with an old(er) motherboard (ASUS A7N8X) and am in need of a video card (the one I currently have is an [em]old[/em] PCI card with about 8MB Vram). I want to run gentoo on this beast, and NEED S-Video out (I don't plan on connecting a monitor).
There will (probably) be no games played on this computer, so I don't need anything too excessive - basically just playing videos out on S-Video. TV Tuner is not needed - I'll probably get a tuner/mpeg2 decoder card. Most likely nVidia, as the ATI drivers aren't too awesome.

This Motherboard is not old at all 
In your situation I would chosse a Nvidia for SURE.

How about a Technotrend DVB-s rev. 1.5? It has an mpeg2 decoder and fbas video out. You can also build yourself a s-video out and digital audio outs. The mainboard should boot fine without any graphics card. Card is about 150. That's about as much as you'd pay for a new gfx and tuner card.

Hehe... the long story is that I took apart my PII machine, b/c it couldn't even sustain 1 MB/s over a 10/100 ethernet connection (spending 90% of it's time doing disk I/O).
So I found an A7N8X Deluxe for $40, and am going to get a T-bird to stick in there (~2400+ish).
If I just get a tuner/decoder card, do I even NEED a graphics card? Or will everything render correctly via the S-Video out on the tuner?
(I have an 8MB PCI card lying about that I will use for setting up the computer)
