|
|
Hey guys, I was google'in around, and found various ways of improving etc-update. I was wondering, what is the best way, for etc-update to automatically diff the files? I really hate having to update files manually, there should be a better way? |

There is dispatch-conf that automates a few of the merges (for instance plain comment merging, CVS header, ...) but it's not what you're looking for (I suppose you want one command, no user input, that finishes all merging). |

dispatch-conf is alright; it works better than just etc-update, as it saves an old version of each config file (so you can undo changes, something not possible with etc-update).
However, I find its interface to be poorly worded and confusing, and not as intuitive as the interface for etc-update. But that's just a minor point of contention; dispatch-conf is overall a much better config update tool. In my opinion, it should be the default update tool, and the one featured in the Gentoo docs. |

Indeed ... unless the first time you do it, you forget to preserve permissions on the archive ... oops. Linux always provides refreshing opportunities to learn from one's mistakes. |

Why backup your /etc from time to time if we have such an easy little thing like cfg-update? |

Well, maybe you can test if it works on an AMD64 machine...
If you have the following ebuilds installed it would probably work:
>=dev-lang/perl-5.0
>=sys-apps/textutils-2.0
>=sys-apps/gawk-3.0
>=sys-apps/grep-2.0
>=app-portage/gentoolkit-0.1.30
>=x11-misc/sux-1.0
>=dev-util/xxdiff-2.9 (or meld, kdiff3, gtkdiff)
You can copy the /usr/portage/app-portage/cfg-update directory to
/usr/local/portage and add "amd64" to the KEYWORDS line in the local
overlay ebuild. If you decide to try it out, please report back if you've
got it working or not!
(See: instructions for using the local portage overlay
and don't forget to run "cfg-update --fix" and "cfg-update --index"
after installing the ebuild...) _________________ When all else fails, read the manual...

works fine for me (amd64)
just editted the ebuild to get it to compile (added amd64 to the keywords) _________________ while(true) {self.input(sugar);} |

I'll go ahead and try it then just hope it doesn't nuke my system, then again it would give me an exscuse to redo some things if it ended up borking my system. _________________ Ware wa mutekinari.
