emerge world intsalling unwanted packages

Hi,

I'm running a gentoo system without x11 (-X in use flags), but when I try to emerge -u world, it tries to install (new install, not upgrade) a whole host of X11 stuff like xorg-x11, qt, xterm, etc. I ran emerge -upvtD to try to gain an insight on why it's trying to install it, but I'm a bit confused by the output.

Can anyone shed some light on my problem? Thank you in advance.

Here are my USE flags as defined in /etc/make.conf:

it seems that's the opengl useflag who wants X11, try with USE="-opengl"

And maybe the x11-libs/qt

Okay, I did

USE="-mpeg" emerge -upvtD world

but the same x11 stuff shows up. I added -mpeg to the make.conf USE flags and did env-update, but the same results.

you may also need to disable sdl.

Okay, I added -sdl and -opengl to my USE flags, did an env-update and also did a emerge --depclean, but when I emerge -upvtD the x11 stuff has moved around on the list, but it's still there.

Using that command eliminates x11 from the list. Is this the command I should use in the future to upgrade all installed packages?

Try to disable tcltk.

don't use this command, but what you can do is setting your USE variable in make.conf so :

USE="-* flag1 flag2 flag3 ...."

at first you disable ALL the flags, and then ONLY add what you want

You already had the right command, you probably just weren't able to interpret the results:

I'm trying to install dev-python/gnome-python-extras because I need the 'gnomeapplet' python module.

However, trying to emerge it produces:

I don't understand why php needs x? I have -x in my useflags. I'm trying to set up a headless webserver, how can I force portage not to install any version of x?

Including "cjk" in USE flag will bring in X too:-
