I am installing 2005.0, stage3, and attempting to compile gentoo-sources kernel.

Each time I run
Code:
"make && make modules_install"

the compiler will run for a moment or two and then stop with an error.

Each time the error is different so I am not sure what to go after to try and fix it.

I have also attempted to install GenKernel (against my better judgement, but for lack of other solutions) to see if maybe the gentoo-sources kernel was the issue and GenKernel also fails with these types of errors.

The last error I received is as follows (using gentoo-sources kernel):

Code:
fs/notify.c: In function 'inotify_dev_queue_event':
fs/inotify.c:325: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <URL:http://bugs.gentoo.org/> for instructions.
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem.
make[1]: *** [fs/inotify.o] Error 1
make: *** [fs] Error 2

as I mentioned, you can pretty much replace the fs/inotify.# with whatever other module you wish as the same error comes up, just with a different module each time.

I have searched the bugs.gentoo.org site for anything on this and have seen several other Segmentation fault errors that appear similar, but none of which are during the kernel compile stage.

I also notice that most of the bugs of this nature oare nt resolved on the bugs site, so I have turned here to get some help before posting the issue onm bugs as I am sure it is either something I am doing wrong, or something wrong with the gentoo software.

There is nothing wrong with the hardware on this machine as most of it is newer components. This machine has run Gentoo as well as Windows XP in the recent past and therefore meets the recommended requirements to run a Gentoo install.

I am installing all of the latest versions from the gentoo mirrors so, except the snapshot, everything is latest (snapshot is 20050603) if that helps.

also, this is installing on a fresh, clean harddrive (10Gig) so I am not attempting to write over previous version or anything like that.

Thanks for any suggestions and help in advance.

Don't be so certain ...

check your hardware, get the UBCD http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/ , and run the RAM and CPU tests ..

If another patch apply clean, but you still have that mistakes, try memtest86 (included on gentoo live cd)
