wirelesss selection

I am looking for a program, that does not require KDE, that will list all available 802.11 networks. My card does NOT support monitor mode, I am only interested in seeing networks that brodcast their essid. It would be great if the program could tell iwconfig which essid I want to use. Is there anything like this out there?
