Does anyone know of a good tutorial which explains how to setup postfix as the only virtual mail server which works with mysql for sending and receiving on a gentoo server? |

Have you checked the documentation and the Howto's at postfix.org? Lots of good stuff there. |

yes i did. Because there are so many, I was hoping there was a particular one someone would suggest which didn't have any ssl or special authentication they 've used before. |

Well, Postfix is so flexible its only natural that there are so many different specialized howto's and configs are out there. I think your going to have to read a few and pick out what you need to accomplish your objective.
I think there is a gentoo howto with mysql and virtual delivery. Haven't read it myself though...here it is
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/virt-mail-howto.xml
P.S. How's the name server working? |

the name server seems to be working great, but I guess I won't really know till i put it to the test when I get a mail server working to resolve the domain names for the mail stuff.
I did try starting the postfix config on the gentoo handbook, but you need a ssl certificate to actually make it work right. |

Well, like I said, I haven't read it, but Postfix doesn't require ssl. You can make a self signed certificate if an official certificate is holding you back.
If I were you, I'd start off with a basic howto just getting postfix up and running. As far as mailers go, a basic config in Postfix is fairly easy. Play around with it and add capabilities as you go and get more comfortable with Postfix. Trying to integrate several apps with Postfix could be difficult on your first go round. |

All the virtual Postfix how-tos are pretty similar and you can really pick and choose what you want to support. In my case I dropped Mailman and skipped the ssl stuff. I'd actually suggest reading a number of configs because some explain things better than others. The Gentoo one is pretty decent, but there are still some odd parts in it.
