some emerges (phoenix for example) take quite some time... being the impatient, multitasking, 'attention deficit victim' that I am, would it be prudent to do other things (not another emerge, but permission changes, symlink additions, troubleshooting, etc) while an emerge is processing?? If not, that's fine, just a silly question I have. |

I usually emerge from konsole while webbrowsing, editing, mailing ecc... all but resource-consuming things (like playing hyper-speedy 3d games...) and never had problems. I also have no qualms in doing multiple emerges.
Once I was emergin sun-j2sdk from a konsole, koffice from another and other things from a third-one (I rememeber I emerged mplayer, crafty, pure-ftpd and something more waiting for the bigger packages). Still I was able to browse internet without any major slowdown (well I think 512Mb ram were helpful...)
And yes, my system is up and functional...
When emerging a package it will be compiled in a temporary directory and only after this is completed it will be merged in the system. |

Exactly what is the danger? I did that for A LOT of things without any problem. I thought the most crucuial moment during emerge is at the end of the process, when the files are merged into the system but maybe I'm wrong? |
