Ive a nforce4 motherboard that comes with the nforce sound (AC97 Compilant) its suposed to be a 7.1 sound system, but since it does not even play 2 sounds at the same time by hardware in linux Im a little afraid that these 7.1 channels doesnt even work too...
Have someone tested it? Im thinking about buying some sound boxes but before i need to know if it will work...
If it does are there any howto i could follow?

In case it doesnt, does that sound blaster live 24bits (7.1 i think) have these features on linux? (hardware mixing, surroun, ...)?

Not that familar with the Nvidia onboard sound, but if it's anything like a lot of onboard components, it's probably software driven 7.1 surround. The soundblaster 24 bit has hardware surround sound. It probably has a digital passthrough as well so you can connect it to a receiver. The sound blasters are supported pretty well with Alsa. I have a Audigy and it works fine. The passthrough works with my receiver, and I also have a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers that work great also.

Its a 7.1 onboard sound device, but i use the nforce driver (AC97) that was the same when i was using a nforce2 board (5.1) and so on... thats why im not too sure if it will work...

Im with the 5.1 sound kit here but im not getting it to work... I dont get sound in the center or rear... dont know what else i could change to make it work...
in alsamixer center is unmutted and on.

What should i configure?

this IEC958 and IEC958p doesnt seem to make diference in the output.
Im with a little surround here:

for example ive:
FRONT L
FRONT R
SUB
CENTER
REAR L
REAR R

I hear sound in the:
FRONT L
FRONT R
SUB
REAR L

do sound from center or the rear right...
any idea why this?

ive tested this in windows and all boxes are working ok there

Sorry, I was thinking of your using spdif 5:1 sound..
If you list the output of your sound device from lspci it might help others provide help

Not a lot on google other than info about intel-8x0.. are using a recent kernel?
And what versions of alsa are you using?

Edit: came across a thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-338914-highlight-rear+channel.html

thanks a lot man!
Just did what you said, i was using the 1.0.8 (the last stable), upgrading for unstable now 1.0.9 (all the alsa packages) its working :)
Before my right channel(the front) was much lower than the left, only now i sense it hehe

Just need to turn on duplicate and the rear works, only didnt find out how to make center work :p
