When I start kde I get the startup sound, so I know my alsa system is working.
However if I try to run xmms right after KDE opens up I get a message
that the OSS sound system can't be opened. If I wait a few minutes and
try hitting play again on XMMS, it works.

I am posting this on desktop environments, since I think this is a kde issue.
Also why does XMMS complain about OSS, when I'm running alsa
(or does xmms rely on oss emulation in alsa?)

I'm betting there is a dameon that runs for a few miutes on kde startup
that grabs the sound device and until it shuts down I caan't use any
Multimedia apps.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Exactly.

So either disable Arts (K -> Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System), or change the suspend time.

Or change the output plugin from xmms (crtl-p -> Audio I/O plugins -> Output plugin) you might want to select arts there if you want to do it via the arts deamon, in that case make sure xmms is compiled with the arts flag.

Anyway what ever you do OSS is probably not a smart selection in xmms anyway.

I had the alas use flag set, so why doesn't xmms use it?
I'll try setting the arts use flag and re-emerge xmms.

First I'll look for the suspend time setting and reduce it (to zero maybe)
I think I've been there and done that before (but in gnome with esound!)

How should emerge know if it both compiles OSS and ALSA which one is the prefered one?

The use flag only means ALSA is built into xmms. You still have to select it as your prefered output in the plugin list, if that is what you want. So you can just fireup xmms and select alsa.

I guess OSS is compiled in by default (or is there a use flag for that I can turn OFF?)
Anyway I'll check the XMMS configuration options.

I set the timeout on the arts dameon to 10 seconds, problem gone.

If changing the output plugin doesn't help, you could also try running artsdsp xmms rather than xmms.
