is there a way that i can specify where i get the emerge system files from. i sat for over 25 minutes with it locked up on a two meg file. the highest d/ls that i get from there is 20Kb compaired to 70 from other sources. the swedish one is great at like 80. i'm red/ling now since there was a problem with the stage3 tarball. something about an EOF that wasn't supposed to be there. i did a check sum and it was fine. so hopefully before i try to install again someone might have an answer to the first sentence.

i've heard great things about this distro, so why not try it out.
thanks

In your /etc/make.conf, there is a GENTOO_MIRRORS (or PORTAGE_MIRRORS, can't recall). Uncomment that and add your mirror.

On the gentoo web site http://www.gentoo.org there is a link for mirrors.

So, what is the problem with Ibiblio? Everyone saying it is slow - i have a 256kb/128kb ADSL connection, the highest I got from it was 5kB/s... terrible
Where are rsync mirrors set up? There are some quite slow - not like Ibiblio, but still slow. And the last question: documentation says portage tree is about 90MB, but I am downloading no more than 32MB. What's wrong?

I just did an emerged the update to portage, in the new make.conf file it now has the oregan state mirror instead of ibiblio. Something I had done already since I live near there (Richmond, BC, <part of the Vancouver Lower Mainland>). I get faster transfers (it's the closest mirror to me)

emerge mirrorselect

This is a little app that lets you select mirrors from around the world and automatically adds the GENTOO_MIRROR line to your make.conf
