I am on the part where you compile your kernel, but I keep getting errors doing it. My errors say: : undefined reference to 'release_firmware'
make *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1
Any ideas?

You are going to need to provide way more information then that.
A good start would be kernel version, platform, a kernel config file, how you are compiling your kernel (genkernel or by hand etc), and also more lines of output from the end of the compile. |

Ok, to start off I am trying to compile a vanilla sources kernel, version 2.6.11.10. I am compiling it for a Pentium 3 manually by hand. I'll now list all the lines from the end of the compile starting from when the errors started. If you need more, please tell me.
dnsdomainname: Unkown Host
UPD include/linux/compile.h
CC init/version.o
LD init/built-in.o
LD .tmp_vmlinux
sound/built-in.o(.text+0x1ab1ba): In function 'hdsp_request_fw_loader':
: undefined reference to 'request_firmware'
sound/built-in.o(.text+0x1ab1ee): In function 'hdsp_request_fw_loader':
: undefined reference to 'release_firmware'
sound/built-in.o(.text+0x1ab28d): In function 'hdsp_request_fw_loader':
: undefined reference to 'release_firmware'
make : *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] error 1
Any better? |

I'd try removing all Sound/Alsa support from your kernel and trying again to see if it compiles. If so, then we can go from there to figure out what is wrong with your sound setup. |

Ok... Compiling now, this might take a while!
I'll get back to you when it's done. |

Yes, it compiled fine without sound. Now how can we get the sound working? Before I had ALSA and OSS compiled into my kernel, not as modules. Could that have caused the problem? |

Okay, I compiled the kernel with sound as a module and that seems to have done the trick! Thanks for your help Crisis. |

Glad to help, although I'm not sure why it should matter that it is a module as opposed to compiled in. |
