Hello,

I'm trying to get root-tail to display on a specific virtual desktop. I currently use KDE and have 4 virtual desktops. I would like root-tail to only show on the 4th one....I'm not sure how to do that though.... any clues?

you could use (super)karamba for that - it would appear in the desktop background.
another possibility would be a terminal :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I would specifically like to use the app 'root-tail'. In the man page it mentions a display id, but I don't know what the display id's would be for each individual desktops

Coincidences never cease, ultim8 . I read of `root-tail' today on
GentooForums, and I too would like to know if the individual KDE
desktops have different ids. I am aware of the programs
Code:

xprop
xwininfo -children

Invoke, then click in the window (or desktop) whose information
you want. I wasn't able to get ids which distinguished the
desktops. However, each cmd has several options that I did not try.

ultim8, would you be willing to post your root-tail cmd, with
arguments ... and where (in what shell or init
file) you are executing it?

I have tried

Code:
root-tail  -g  800x250+100+50 -font 10x20 /var/log/messages,red \
  -font 12x24 /var/log/syslog,green   -font 10x20 /var/log/auth.log &

but am not yet content with the result. With your command, does
the root-tail display remain? Does it appear on all your KDE desktops?

When I invoke root-tail from `konsole', I only get messages on
one KDE desktop (I think that this is what you want) except that
the messages don't stay. If I switch to a different desktop,
then back, the messages are gone. Indeed (I only just started
playing with it) it seems that even moving windows on the desktop
eradicates the root-tail display.

Any chance you found a solution for that?
