Hello
I try to install gentoo since a few days. this is my second gentoo-install, but another computer. I realized some issues. I could resolve all of them, except the last one.
First I try to install 2005.0 stage 1, and all seems well until bootstrap.sh. It seems to me that emerge could not find all packages it needed, sometimes the host could't be connect, and sometimes the server don't have the packages I need.
OK, Perhaps you are to n00b, I think to myself. I began once again with makin' the Filesystems and mounting. then I start to install stage 2. Same thing, all seems well, and then I type
Code: | emerge --sync && emerge --emptytree system |
so my computer work and work and work... and sometimes I go and look what it is working. And the same thing as before: since 5 hours emerge try to download readline50-001.. sometimes the host's are unreachable, sometimes the server tells: "No such directory `pub/mirrors/gnu/readline/readline-5.0-patches'.
I haven't forget to copy /etc/resolv.conf before chroot. Is it possible that all servers aren't updated yet? since 5 hours and more? what can I do? can I download the sources of readline for myself and "say" portage where it is?
[EDIT] OH damn... don't know how to paste text with links2 how could I post my make.conf whithout typing it? |

hmm ok emerge --emptytree system wasn't successful. I tried something else:
emerge --emptytree --fetchonly system
same thing. All packages was fetched, except readline. Is this a bug? |

It's reported, but it should work nevertheless. Try running emerge --sync and retry. |

Sorry to resurrect and old post, but I am having the same problem too.
I just recently installed 2005.1 on an old PII w/256 MB; however, I never could find the entry point into the stage 1 install, as I had done previously. So, having successfully completed the documented install, I wanted to re-compile everything, so it would be optimized for my box and USE flags.
Code: | emerge --newuse --emptytree -F system |
Which fetches all the necessary source code, until it gets to readline, which hangs up as follows:
Code: | >>> Downloading ftp://ftp.luth.se/pub/unix/gnu/readline/readline-5.0-patches/readline50-003
--20:28:41-- ftp://ftp.luth.se/pub/unix/gnu/readline/readline-5.0-patches/readline50-003

This continues for several hours. BTW, I just tried an emerge --sync, and then tried again, but that did not help.
However, if I try to emerge readline directly, it works!
Code: | $ emerge sys-libs/readline

Why would --emptytree make a difference on fetching source code?
BTW, the --emptytree emerge works after immediately emerging readline by itself!
What am I missing here? Could this be related to a change in my USE flags? Previously I had the defaults, but now I have:
Code: | $ cat /etc/make.conf
...
USE="aalib adns -afs alsa arts bash-completion berkdb -bonobo canna cdr cscope
cups curl directfb eds emacs -emboss esd -fam -firebird flac flash foomaticdb -freetds gd
