I just installed Gentoo for the first time, I rebooted, but the network isn't working. Well...it seems I managed to set-up my eth0 fine, except for the fact that somehow its not the ethernet adapter (possibly firewire from what I have found) and the ethernet is on eth1.

How do I change the stuff around so that it tries to connect through eth1 instead of eth0?

I tried doing

Code:
# cd /etc/init.d
# ln -s net.eth0 net.eth1
# rc-update add net.eth1 default

But on the third step it keeps saying that /etc/init.d/net.eth1 not found

Goronmon,

What you were doing looks right.
You can remove the eth1394 module from /lib/modules<kernel ver>/.... so it cannot load, then your real NIC will become eth0 after the next boot.

Thats only a temporary fix. eth1394 will come back at the next kernel build unless you turn it off in the config file.

To avoid the boot step, remove eth1394 and your NIC module, then modprobe your NIC module, it will become eth0 and then
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
should work

Goronmon

I added eth1394 to /etc/hotplug/blacklist then configured eth0 as normal

If anyone could give me an answer to this, it would really help.

I still can't get this working at all and I've been spending hours, I'd really appreciate some more ideas for this.

Goronmon,

Do you have both eth1394 and your real NIC module both loading?
if so,
Code:
ifconfig -a
witl show eth0 and eth1

You either need to configure eth1 and fix your routing table so it gets your default route or stop eth1394 from loading (if its loaded).
Code:
lsmod
will show you what modules are loaded
Code:
modprobe -l | grep eth1394
will show you the full path to eth1394.ko for the running kernel, so you can rename (mv) or delete (rm) it.
