Looking for linux tools that can securely delete free space on a HDD. Ive found a tool called 'wipe' which seems to be capable of securely deleting files according to DOD 5220.22-M.
Im not aware of a way that this tool can be used to securely erase a folder containing files, or to securely wipe free space on a HDD that is active at the time of doing so. There seem to be a lot of windows tools available out there that are capable of doing this, such as those offered by Symantec, McAfee and PGP.
Is there a way of achieving the above using wipe that I haven't realised? Or is there some other tool that you can put files: x, y and z into and then delete the folder securely or wipe 20Gb of free space from your 30Gb HDD with securely?
Thankyou _________________ None

Thankyou. Unfortunately those threads seem a little inconclusive. I too, wish to delete the data without actually nuking the entire drive and all the data on it. I guess i'll keep looking. _________________ None |
