Alternatively you could give mrxvt a try. |

Thanks - ideally I was after something I could nest multiple xterms in (got quite used to control and clicking in the xterm window - call me a stuck-in-the-mud but I like xterm).
I tried emerge -pv gnome-terminal and it gave me 48 dependencies (including alsa and esound!).
Am I right in thinking (again, extrapolating from the screenshot) that you can nest other terminals (i.e. xterm) inside a gnome-terminal tab? |

No, gnome-terminal is a terminal on its own right, there's no xterm involved.
You want mrxvt.
