I emerged world yesterday and pulled down the new version of Xfree (4.2.99). Unfortunately, my X no longer works. I am running the ati drivers from their website (from November - 2.5.1 I think) and every time I try startx, I get
Fatal Server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
I did notice that if I emerge -p ati-drivers, xfree 4.2.1 is a prerequistie. Any chance that the ebuild will be updated to work with the new Xfree 4.2.99?
Is this happening to anyone else? Did anyone get this working yet? |

looking in /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ I see that ati-drivers-2.5.1-r1.ebuild has a requirement of xfree 4.2.99 so I would see if you could emerge that. It might fix your problems... |

I had a similar problem I believe...and if its the same as the problem you are having, do an xf86config again and then try again. |

This is very strange. I also looked at the ati-drivers-2.5.1-r1 ebuild, and noticed that it references xfree 4.2.99. However, when I emerge -p ati-drivers, it wants to install xfree 4.2.1-r2.
Tried to run XFconfig -configure, but drops out with a module confilict. |

I get the same sort of error:
(EE) fglrx(0): R200DRIScreenInit failed (DRI version = 4.1.0, expected 3
then the fatal server error. |

I just emerged 4.2.99 at work and realized that there is a message after you emerge xfree. It says that there is an issue and you must unmerge ati-drivers and emerge xfree-drm.
I'll do that tonight and let you know. I'm still not sure what driver to use if I unmerge ati-drivers. I obviously cannot use fglrx. Maybe radeon will work. |

Wrong. It has a requirement of <x11-base/xfree-4.2.99, which means that it must have a version less than 4.2.99. I ran into this too.
I've got a little script I run after I 'emerge rsync' that edits package.mask, unmasking a bunch of things for me, and masking others; I had to add a '>=x11-base/xfree-4.2.99' line in there to prevent portage from trying to upgrade X.
The note about xfree-drm doesn't help me whatsoever; the "radeon" driver does NOT support the r300 (Radeon 9500/9700), so us r300 users are SOL until ATI releases a binary driver for XFree 4.3 . If you have a r200 (8500) or earlier, you should be covered by the "radeon" driver. |

I'm lucky I have an 8500. I finally got X working (sort of).. The dislplay really doesn't fit my monitor - I'm running at 1600 x 1024 which used to work perfectly with the ATI drivers, but its a stretch for the radeon driver. Oh, and no GL. I get a paltry 100 FPS using glxgears. I used to get > 1000. At least it works |

Mh.. this XFree is bleeding edge right? I just installed yesterday XFree 2.1 and the 9700pro-Driver. I get 4560 fps (pretty good I think ) on my 1.7ghz/512mb sdram Machine with glxgears.
Does an upgrade on 4.2.99 brings more than only problems with the driver?
BTW. since I didn't knew that there was an ebuild for the ATI-Driver I installed it manually (Version 2.5.1 for XFree 2.0) from the rpm with all the nasty error msgs |
