I have an Creative Audigy 2 card that appears to be installed correctly but I don't get any sound ouputed: Heres what I did: I added ALSA_CARDS="emu10k1" to /etc/make.conf.
I also compiled sound support into the kernel but not alsa or OSS.
I then:
emerge alsa-lib alsa-driver alsa-oss alsa-utils mpg321
All went well. I added the following lines to /etc/modules.d/alsa
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
options snd cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
I've been trying to test the sound using xmms, but its not working. I emerged xmms-alsa, xmms, vorbisogg, xmms-cdread, but I can't get a sound. all the sound levels go up and down on xmms and the lsmod below has all the modules loaded so it appears to be working:
Here's my lsmod:
snd_seq_midi 8256 0
snd_emu10k1_synth 8192 0
snd_emux_synth 38400 1 snd_emu10k1_synth
snd_seq_virmidi 7680 1 snd_emux_synth
snd_seq_midi_emul 9344 1 snd_emux_synth
snd_ioctl32 27520 0
snd_pcm_oss 53664 0
snd_mixer_oss 18048 1 snd_pcm_oss

snd_seq 55264 8 snd_seq_midi,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_emul,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_emu10k1 92836 1 snd_emu10k1_synth
snd_rawmidi 23072 3 snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_emu10k1
snd_seq_device 8332 6 snd_seq_midi,snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi

snd_pcm 90632 4 snd_ioctl32,snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec

snd 49864 14 snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_ioctl32,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
nvidia 4053436 0
ath_pci 56232 0
ath_rate_onoe 9488 1 ath_pci
wlan 106068 3 ath_pci,ath_rate_onoe
ath_hal 171248 2 ath_pci
So I'm confused and don't really know where to go from here. Is it xmms, is it alsa?
btw, I used alsamixer to make sure PCI and MASTER was unmuted and set to 100%
I also have a 64 bit amd system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

did you try anything else to check your sound? _________________ When your problem is resolved, put [SOLVED] in the topic. |

no I didn't, I was actually wondering if there was an easier way to test sound. Any ideas? |

when I was searching the forums to find another way to test a sound, I found a thread that helped me.
I just muted the headphone bar in alsamixer.... Everything works now. Thanks, for the help. |

If alsamixer finds you card and sets your levels clearly most of it is OK.
I use mplayer to test alsa , but any digital sound app will do. Test it with what you want it to do.
I see no reason that you should have to mute your headset for sound to work , I would not be happy with that as a solution. I'd call that a workaround.
Also dont set your levels to overdrive if you want decent sound. Keep it out of the red.
Like real audio devices , the occational peak into the red is fine but red is not red becasue it is the best sound level. If you see a red light light do you put your foot to the floor or slow down?
