Hi all
I'm experimenting here with a new Supermicro 1U server with a 2.8ghz Xeon, 1GB RAM, 2 SATA-150 disks on the on-board Intel SATA controller, and one disk as JBOD on the on-board Adaptec RAID controller.
The two disks on the Intel controller have their partitions in RAID1 mirrored; the one on the Adaptec used as spare.
So far, this all works well.
When I fail a member of an array, and have it resynced (this to test whether this runs correctly), it's another story.
Although syncing works fine, during that time, the server becomes quite sluggish, and regularly hangs, in particular things to disk operations. A simple 'ls' from a dir with only a few files can take several minutes to complete. It also doesn't seem to matter which disks are involved, but it seems worse when it's syncing the two disks on the Intel controller (meaning it's not the cause of the custom-compiled mv_sata.ko module, required by the Adaptec chip).
Since I never had this on any other server or pc before, it might be hardware-related. Below is a dump of lspci:

Kernel is an SMP 2.6.8-686 with Debian patches, and HIGHMEM support.
Anyone have similar experiences?
Thanks. _________________ Registered linux user #341804
