|

Hi guys, I just emerged Gnome-2.2 after having used KDE for quite a while (actually stopped because the KDE-3.1 upgrade wouldn't work, and I couldn't live with 3.0.3 - so why not try the new gnome.)
When I startup gnome (startx) it comes with a lot of messages, containing this text:
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
What is this? it appeareantly means I can's save the config of my panel-clock _________________ Best regards,

I found the answer here:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-list/2002-September/msg00113.html
It was simply, that I had started evolution (in fluxbox) and when x was killed, gconf-1 was running - which meant gconf-2 couldn't start.
Now I only have problems with using gnome..
f.ex. How do I remove the top-menu-bar? I have put a menu in the rightside of the screen - How do I determine size and height of it, like I can do in KDE? The reason I want that, is that I want grellm to run below the right-side menu - as I don't have much in it.
Or perhaps it would be cool if I could have the menu, that comes out (from the gnome logo - including actions and applications - when I rightclick the mouse on the desktop - like in fluxbox.
If you have any input - please tell. _________________ Best regards,

I get this error when running gnome-terminal from fluxbox! I never had this problem until recently, when I decided to install Galeon again. It's F'in annoying too, and I wish I knew how to fix it. |

this didn't help: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-list/2002-September/msg00113.html
?
ie. kill gconf* - before starting the process that gives you the error. _________________ Best regards,

sure! That works, but that takes way more time than I need just so I can start up a terminal or read my email. If I do that, I'm fine until I run Galeon again . Oh, then I gotta kill gconfd-1 again!.
I mean, killing a process everytime I start a program is hardly a solution to this problem. |

I believe the real solution is to not mix gnome-1.x and gnome-2.x components (as they require gconf-1 and gconf-2 respectively - which can not run at the same time).
ie. you could run galeon-cvs (which is a gnome-2.x app AFAIK) - or recompile your other app to use gnome-1.x. _________________ Best regards,

Galeon 1.3.x is pretty much ready for the mainstream, it's included
in the latest mandrake beta. It is quite different from 1.2.x though,
a lot less configurability, but I love it.
As for evolution, the gnome 2 version should be out in a month or 2. _________________ Mark Finlay - Gnome Hacker of Sorts

I went and did an emerge galeon-cvs and portage downloaded the Mozilla 1.3b and of course that took the usual hour of compile time, then I noticed that Galeon didn't compile. I ran emerge galeon-cvs again , and remember I needed mozilla to be compiled with gtk2 support which makes it buggy as hell. So it was either wait another whole hour and a half for mozilla to compile or.. Actually use my computer for something. So I guess I'm going to be galeon-less until a new version is released. |
